Nina’s Pet Food Pantry

Helping dogs and cats get through “Ruff” times.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Weiner family in memory of their Portuguese Water Dog named Nina, in 2009 Young At Heart Pet Rescue launched a pet food pantry to help pets and owners during trying economic times.

Operating from established food pantries — St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry within St. Francis de Sales parish in Lake Zurich, IL, and Palatine Township’s Food Pantry –  Nina’s Pet Food Pantry provides free dog food, cat food, and other necessary pet items to persons struggling to care for their animal families.

Through donations from supporting individuals and pet supply businesses, Young At Heart stocks the pantry shelves with uniformly sized bags of dry pet food and cans of pet food, as well as other essential pet supplies. Our hope is to alleviate some of the financial burden on families who have been hit hardest by recent economic changes — and in turn, help keep their pets out of local shelters.

Through its partnership with “human” food pantry locations, Nina’s Pet Food Pantry reaches the pets of more than 250 families in need. Over 50,000 lbs. of pet food and supplies have been provided per year.

IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE: Young at Heart provides pet food to needy families through already-established channels of food distribution and cannot distribute directly to the public.  We currently provide pet food for families utilizing the Palatine Township Food Pantry and the St. Francis de Sales Food Pantry in Lake Zurich. We can only provide pet food to clients of those two food pantries at this time, and clients must go through the food pantries in order to access donated pet food.

Young At Heart welcomes donations of unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned pet food, pet shampoo, treats, chews, and toys. Items may be left at participating drop-off locations.
