This page is offered as a service to those shelters that are striving to increase their adoptions of senior pets, and to those owners who must give up their senior dogs or cat and prefer not to surrender them to a shelter.
Since we have not seen or evaluated these pets, we cannot make any representation or take responsibility for any pet’s temperament or health. Prospective adopters should contact the shelter or owner listed with each pet.

Olena

Posted 2-3-12
Olena is a gorgeous 7 year old tuxedo girl with the silkiest fur. She’s a gentle soul, truly regal in appearance when she sits. She’s playful and outgoing – loves to cuddle up on a person’s lap and be petted and also enjoys belly rubs. Give her a head and ear massage, and she’ll stick by your side the whole time! For fun, Olena likes to watch the birds outside. We believe that the best home for her would be one already having cats. So, if you think Olena could be a nice addition to your brood, please come and meet her soon.
To meet Olena, please call Heartland Animal Shelter at 847-296-6400!
Portia

Posted 2-1-12
Meet Portia! She’s 14 years old and just came back from the vet last December with a clean bill of health, as well as all her vaccinations and rabies shot.
She is a spayed female, and has NO claws so she has to stay indoors. She’s a little shy at first, but warms up and is quite a loving cat. She’s never bitten, and has no signs of behavioral problems. The big thing is that she does not get along with other pets. She’s fine with kids, but doesn’t really ‘play’ anymore due to her age. She will let you pick her up, but she prefers to be on stable ground like your lap. She’ll also meow for attention, and overall is a great cat for a single pet family.
Portia currently lives in Naperville. If you have any questions or would like to meet Portia, please contact Liz at campingliz@gmail.com.

Pepper

Posted 1-10-12
Pepper is a 6-1/2-year-old tortoiseshell cat who lived in a home most of her life. In her former home, Pepper lived along with other cats and dogs. In fact, Pepper became bonded with one of the resident cats. At the shelter, however, Pepper seems to prefer human company to feline company, probably because she is surrounded by so many cats. In a new home, we feel she could coexist with another cat, just not a house full. Her former family said that she is an affectionate lap cat and is very sweet-natured. Volunteers and visitors have observed that she loves to play and give head butts. She even knows her name! Pepper has a special dietary requirement and it may be best to keep her on her prescription diet of Hill’s c/d for the rest of her life. This poor kitty really misses the pleasurable life of a comfy home. Do you have it in your heart to give this little lady a second chance in life?
To meet Pepper, please call Heartland Animal Shelter at 847-296-6400!
Rowdy

Posted 1-5-12
This is Rowdy. He is an 11 year old shepherd mix (DOB 6/1/2000) who was abandoned by his owner at a groomer in Arlington Heights.
The vet has him on record as a shepherd ridgeback mix. He’s about 55 pounds, fully vetted and up to date on shots. Needs microchip. Groomer says he has atrophy of the face muscles but it isn’t life threatening and he is not being treated.
Rowdy gets along great with other dogs, and would do well in a home with another canine companion.
To meet Rowdy, contact Almost Home Rescue.
Blue and Cubbie

Posted 1-2-12
Blue and Cubbie are 9-year-old brothers (litter mates) who were adopted from a no-kill shelter in Tennessee when they were 6-weeks-old. They need a new home.
They are 14- & 15-lb Domestic Short hair cats with beautiful, shiny coats. Blue is grey and white and Cubbie is all black. They are by no means overweight, but are just built very large. Blue is a lap-cat who loves to join you on the couch and will crawl right up on your lap. Cubbie prefers to sit next to/near you and likes to walk by and be gently rubbed on by your feet. Both love belly rubs once they trust you.
Those interested can contact Shawna or Dale by phone at 847-346-6878 or by email at ShawnaShewey@gmail.com.
Wrigley & Cubbie
Copy written by owners:
We have two dogs that we need to find new homes for both are males, one Beagle and a Shih Tzu Poodle mix. They have both been neutered.
Wrigley is 8, weighs about 30 pounds and is a medium sized dog (Beagle). Wrigley has Hypothyroidism that requires him to take medicine. We recently had his blood drawn and can provide the results as well as medication. Cubbie is 7, weighs 25 pounds and would be considered a small/medium size breed (Shih Tzu-poodle). Cubbie has no known health issues. They are both current on vaccinations. Both are good with kids and strangers. We recently placed Wrigley in a home with another dog and they ended up not getting along well. He also has separation anxiety. They are both from a home that had other dogs. They have never been introduced to a cat, so I’m not sure if they would fit in a home with them. They are both okay on a leash and are housetrained. We feed them pedigree healthy weight.
We would like them to go (either together or separately) with a family that lives in a single family residence because both of them can be barkers. Wrigley has separation anxiety, so being left alone is difficult for him. Ideally we would like to get them in the same home because it may help with Wrigley’s separation anxiety. Wrigley is a really sweet dog but requires some extra attention.

Ella

Copy below written by Ella’s owners.
Ella is a sweet, 13 year old Maine Coon cat. She has been a part of our family since she was a kitten but has become increasingly unhappy as our family has grown. Once we started having children and got another cat and a dog, it became clear she needs to be an only child. She’s well cared for, spayed, and up to date on her shots. She is also front de-clawed. We are deeply saddened at the thought of her leaving our family and desperately want to find her a loving, calm home where she will be happy. Please help us make our cat happy again. We’re open to a meet and greet and happy to share vet records and/or any other info you need about her.

Madeline

Madeline needs a good loving home!
Her owners fell into some rough times and are unable to keep her. Her Mom went into a nursing home and Dad had to sell the house and move to an apartment that does not allow pets. Madeline is a 12 yr old female spayed domestic short hair cat. She is front declawed and up to date on all her vaccinations. Dr Judy just couldn’t euthanize Madeline, she is such a sweetie!
