Mutt of the Month: Jersey

I am definitely Man’s Best Friends (Women’s, too!). I love people and just love to be with you. I love to have conversations with you, and love hugs! I’m housebroken and great with cats!
This page is offered as a service to those shelters that are striving to increase their adoptions of senior pets, and to those owners who must give up their senior dogs or cat and prefer not to surrender them to a shelter.
Since we have not seen or evaluated these pets, we cannot make any representation or take responsibility for any pet’s temperament or health. Prospective adopters should contact the shelter or owner listed with each pet.

Rocky is a 9 year old german shepherd mix. He’s about 59 pounds and up to date on his shots. Rocky will need to be neutered. Rocky has some known discipline issues and needs extra attention. He’s a good listener as long as he is relaxed. Needs some work when there is something distracting him (like another dog, train, sirens–does not like sirens or other loud noises). He’s lived in a single pet home his entire life. Doesn’t like cats, loves chasing rabbits and other animals. Good with children: Better around children over 5 – but overall a good lovable and playful dog. Food Allergies: None – he’s only been fed dog food, never given table food. Current Rx: None. Very healthy, never been seriously ill or had any medical problems. Rocky will need to be neutered. Please help Rocky find a new home. Please contact Nancy at the following email address if you are interested:n_hoban@sbcglobal.net
Precious is a sweet older lady who would like a quiet home. Her owner died and she was brought to a local shelter. The shelter called us because with her advanced age she was likely to be euthanized since she wouldn’t be adopted in time. She is housebroken and likes to be with her human and will bark at the top (or bottom) of the stairs until she is brought to their level. Precious loves to go on walks and gets excited when she sees her leash. Although she can’t walk fast or far due to her weight, she’s working on it! She can go down three steps on her own and is improving her strength and stamina. She gets along with other dogs, but doesn’t like roughhousing. She stops the playing when the other dogs get rowdy, just like the old lady down the street: “Hey you kids, get off my lawn!!”. She’s beginning to show an interest in rawhides and toys. At night she snores away on a doggie bed in the kitchen. Precious does not mind being gated, she is a very well behaved dog and would be a good companion to an older adult home. CHECK OUT MWDR’S WEBSITE FOR MORE SENIOR DOXIES!! Precious and many other senior dachshunds are available through Midwest Dachshund Rescue, www.mwdr.org For more information on senior dachshunds by email: doxie_60014@earthlink.net
This petite 8 year old Terrier mix is looking for nothing more then a family to love and adore her. Scarlette is very social and friendly with people and she will shower loving kisses on any willing face. Walks and treat filled Kong’s are among her favorite things in life. Scarlette will need to be the only pet in the home; this way she can receive your undivided love and attention. If you think you have the love to share with this sweet senior, stop by the Shelter and meet Scarlette. Corona was adopted from a local shelter as a pup and returned 6 years later. After 1.5 years in a shelter where she was stressed, she was transferred to CBBR and has moved into a foster home with a trainer, other dogs and a cat. She was losing weight, but is doing well to gain and maintain on a (Royal Canin Holistique) senior diet with some wet food. She is happily meeting other dogs on leash and in the foster home. We are taking everything slowly for her – she sees other dogs in the house for short spurts. She is curious and interested in all dogs and people. Her ears and Whiskey-colored eyes just follow everything going on around her. She is good with other dogs, but still not sure how to play. She is generally friendly and calm; though she does get the “zoomies” where she races around and jumps up for joy- she will calm down, but it is a sign of her development – she’s a pup in an adult body. She does adore puppies! She is calmest and relaxed in a smaller space like a bedroom. She likes ear, head and belly rubs and groans when touched. She is passionate about being near people and thinks she is royalty- so she’ll be happy to show you how to treat her. Her new nickname is Lady Kay – same hard sound as Corona and much more regal. She walks nicely on leash and loves to romp in a fenced yard. She thinks squirrels exist to entertain her and will quietly watch and follow them from the ground. I have never heard her bark – she is really quiet and happy to be a stealth squirrel patroller.
She likes to sleep in her own small chair or be up on furniture. We are working on the “OFF” command to only allow furniture when given permission (she really likes to go up high to see the world). She knows visual and verbal cues for “leave it”, “wait”, and “sit” as well as “down”. Cats are way too interesting to her – I’d recommend no cats or young children, but tweens and Adults households would find her a loving companion! She is healthy, spayed, microchipped and up to date on all vaccinations. You must complete an application at www.cbbr.info/application.html to get the adoption process started!! Gracie is a six to eight-year-old, 55-pound Pit Bull Terrier-mix looking for a loving home. This glossy brindle girl was found as a stray in Morton Grove, Illinois. She is sweet, loving, and gives kisses to anyone who will accept them … and is crate-trained and housebroken. Her only flaw is that she barks at people. The funny thing is that it doesn’t seem to mean anything more than noise. She just has a lot to say!! Her foster mom calls her “honey bunch.” She is looking for an experienced and patient dog-lover to care for her and continue her training. She would prefer to be the only pet in the home so she can gather up all your love and attention but she is good with other smaller dogs when properly introduced. Gracie is very healthy, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and on preventative. Her adoption fee of $150 benefits the rescued pets of Chicagoland Bully Breed Rescue. You must complete an application at www.cbbr.info/application.html to get the adoption process started!! Chicagoland Bully Breed Rescue
Zoey came to Heartland with her kittens after being found wandering into an empty warehouse. She was then transferred to a foster home with her four 2-day-old kittens. Very uncharacteristic for a new momma cat, she not only allowed the foster mom to touch her and her babies, but she purred loudly while she was having her face scratched and while she was being petted. Protective of her babies, she rarely left the nest for the first four weeks, and would grab the foster mom`s hand with both of her front paws, pulling her to rub and pet her. We have no doubt that she has been someone`s pet. Litter trained immediately, she liked both canned food and dry. Zoey is available at Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook, Illinois. Please visitwww.heartlandanimalshelter.org to get an application, or email heartlandanimals@yahoo.com or call 847-296-6400 with any questions.
Sammy is a gentle boy. He is about 8 years old as of August 2009, and is front-paw declawed. He has such an alert, attentive look on his face. He is unique in appearance, being white and black in color, but having a little black patch of fur on his chin resembling a goatee. Sammy is quiet and doesn`t cause a fuss. He is a polite boy who will most likely greet you when you visit the shelter. He likes to “hang out” by the cat room entrance so that he can be one of the first kitties to receive attenion. He also likes to be on the sink counter, as it`s a good place to get a quick drink, a bite of food, or a nice visit with a person. Please visitwww.heartlandanimalshelter.org to get an application, or email heartlandanimals@yahoo.com or call 847-296-6400 with any questions.
Hi, I’m Poncho. I am a 9 year old Chihuahua/Min Pin mix that is looking for his forever home. I was recently returned to the shelter because my owner became ill and could no longer take care of me. I am housebroken and crate trained. I I am affectionate and love to be held. I walk well on leash. I tend to be a bit possessive of my owners so I would do best in a home with adults or children at least 12 years and older. I am not a big fan of other animals and would really prefer to be your one and only. If you are interested in adopting me, please contact the West Suburban Humane Society at 630-960-9600, ext. 10 or email adoptiondesk@wshs-dg.org.
Hi, I’m Lucky! Yes, I am lucky all right. Lucky that Underdog took me in and is giving me a warm foster home and two square meals a day! You see, it wasn’t long ago that I was left to fend for myself. I guess when my parents lost their home to foreclosure, I lost mine, too. They left me behind and all I could do was AAARRRROOOOO and howl and hope that someone would come feed me and get me. Please call Debbie at 847-362-3056 or email kruegerd55@gmail.com with information on your household and schedule.
Hi, I’m Evelyn! I used to be someone’s pet until I was found wandering as a stray. I know all about a house and car, and I know all the rules. I am completely housebroken, and I never touch treats that aren’t mine. I am approximately 6 1/2 years old and I do not beg- that is just boorish behavior! I am a lady. I think I am a mix of beagle, pointer and maybe even a little Australian Shepherd. I also weigh in at only 23 pounds. Email the Debbie at kruegerd55@gmail.com or call 847-362-3056 with information on your household and schedule.
Hello, my name is Duke. I’m a very handsome 14 year old Newfoundland/Labrador mix and my owner recently passed away. My owner’s family wasn’t able to keep me and was going to have me put to sleep, but my neighbor has taken me in and is caring for me until I can find a permanent home. I weigh 72 pounds, and I’m as quiet as a mouse. I love other dogs and cats and I’ve never met a person I didn’t like. I love going for walks and laying around in the yard looking for someone to talk to and play with. I’m very gentle and lovable, and I have a lot of life left in me! If you’re interested in giving me a new home, please email Amy at ablank71@gmail.com.

Moose is 9 years old and plays like a puppy! She loves living with a family and prefers a family with pre-teens, teenagers, and energetic adults so that she has someone to run and play with. She is very much a “people” dog. She will be happiest as the only dog in the home. She is very healthy, has very clean teeth and exercises herself to stay in shape if you don’t take her out for a run. She doesn’t like to play in the rain, so on rainy days, she will workout by running circuits through the house. She has been described as a very “elegant” dog. She is a princess. She would like to be the only dog in the house. She is not accustomed to living with cats or other pets. For more information, contact Elaine on her cell phone 312-953-2588. My name is Cato, but everyone calls me “Mr. Wonderful”. I am a 10-lb, nine-year old Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix. I bet you are asking yourself what makes me so wonderful, so I will tell you. I love meeting new people. In fact, if you get down to my level I will gladly snuggle up or roll over for a tummy rubs. I enjoy the company of other dogs, just ask my two furry foster brothers. But I am also content to play by myself. I could bat my favorite ball around for hours. I love car rides, but there is no need to go out and get me a big car since I prefer to sit on your lap (or sleep on your lap if it is a long car ride). I like walks around town, there is so much to see so many people to meet, and would happily go anywhere your wanted to take me. I am looking for someone who wants to be showered with love. If you think you are that person arrange a time to meet me and I will show you why they call me “Mr. Wonderful”. Cato is very healthy, neutered, vaccinated for rabies, distemper and bordatella, heartworm-tested, de-wormed and micro-chipped. His adoption fee of $65 benefits the pets of FCACC. To meet and possibly adopt Cato, please contact his foster mom Laura at trinity66@dearborntower.net or 312-714-6444.
Arty is a quiet, friendly and sweet 10-year-old, 65-pound male shepherd/lab-mix looking for a loving home. Arty landed at Chicago Animal Care & Control when his human entered a nursing home. Lucky for Arty, he was transferred to the Friends of Chicago Animal Care & Control foster program. He is living in a wonderful foster home where he has proven himself perfectly housebroken, and great with the four and six-year-old children in residence. He is full of tail wags and kisses for everyone he meets, including other dogs. (Not sure if he’s ever met a cat.) Arty loves to go on walks, but he’s no running partner. He also enjoys hopping on the furniture when no one is looking, but his foster mom is trying to break him of that habit. Arty knows the commands sit and down, and takes treats gently. Arty is healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, heartworm-tested, de-wormed and micro-chipped. He also had a recent dental, and a few extractions. His adoption fee of $65 benefits the dogs of FCACC.
To meet and possibly adopt Arty, please contact Holly at hdupartsprint@earthlink.net or 773-406-5118.
This adorable and friendly 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier was found as a stray by a Good Samaritan. Although a senior, Ricky is active and loves to play with toys, especially balls. Since he does not always like to share his toys we are asking for a home with children over the age of 8. Ricky would prefer to be the only dog in the home, unless the other dog is very calm. If you have a place in your home and heart for this sweetheart, stop by and meet Ricky. For more information please visit Anderson Animal Shelters website at www.andersonanimalshelter.org or call 847-697-2880 x: 28.

This little beagle mix female was brought to the pound by her owner because she is old and could no longer hunt. She is good with other dogs and if rescued or fostered can be given shots so she is up to date. She does not have much more time at the pound as they euthanize due to lack of space. Please help this sweet older gal if possible. She gave the best years of her life to her owner and doesn’t deserve to die in a pound.
