The Journey Towards a Home Away from Home for Senior Pets:
~Mission Milestone Campaign~
You can be a part of something amazing for homeless senior pets!

The mission of Young at Heart Pet Rescue is to rescue and rehome senior dogs and cats, and to reduce the number of senior pets needlessly euthanized in open-access shelters. One of our major milestones is to build a shelter just for senior dogs and cats.

In December of 2012, Young at Heart Pet Rescue completed the first phase of our long-term plans and moved one step closer to making the dream of building a safe haven for senior pets a reality with the purchase of eight acres in unincorporated Woodstock, IL. The land is completely raw – a beautiful and serene blank canvas to create a safe haven for older pets. With the hundreds of requests we receive to help senior pets on a monthly basis, we are eager to develop this land into an indoor and outdoor sanctuary for senior pets, creating a campus that caters to senior pets’ every need prior to finding their forever home, from on-site veterinary care to a full-service adoption center to life-long sanctuary housing. We have just begun Phase 2 of this campus, which will allow us to begin to shape the grounds for future use.

Since we started in 2005, Young at Heart has been fortunate to have a small but dedicated army of foster families to care for the senior pets we rescue until they go to their forever homes. However, the number of homeless senior dogs and cats in need of help far exceeds our network of foster families. While it is difficult to quantify how many senior animals are relinquished to open-access shelters, we can quantify the progress that we are making. Currently, we rescue 100+ senior pets a year that, at an average age of 9.7 years, were considered “too old” for adoption. With a brick and mortar adoption facility, we will be able to triple the number of lives saved each year. An adoption facility catering solely to the needs of senior dogs and cats will be the first of its kind in Illinois. Not only is it a significant milestone for our organization, but it is also a much needed service for the population of homeless senior animals.

We are incredibly excited and humbled to announce that Matthias Jans Architects is donating 100% of the architect and project management costs, along with John Lazzara and his team of engineers who are donating 100% of the engineering, landscape design, and surveying costs to Young at Heart so that we can begin building as soon as possible. We are incredibly grateful for their support and eager to see this facility become a reality as quickly as possible!

mission milestones
$25,600 was
raised at our annual Wags to Wishes benefit on June 22nd, 2013 for Phase 2 of our Mission Milestone Campaign. The funds raised thus far will be put towards clearing the land, putting in the driveway, adding septic and a well, and landscaping (including walking trails, pond, and memorial garden) for our future Adoption Center’s outdoor play and event space!
Mission Milestone 2 is an incredibly important phase, as it marks the launch of creating a campus just for senior dogs and cats, which includes adoption headquarters where adoption events, training events, and fundraisers can be held, an on-site veterinary clinic and sanctuary housing.

Please make a contribution of any size to Phase 2 of our Mission Milestone Campaign and join us in building a brighter future for senior dogs and cats. As a very special Thank You, donations of $250 or more will be permanently recognized in the main outdoor play area with donors’ names inscribed on a beautiful plaque for all current and future friends of Young at Heart to see.
